the Feasiblity of Mango leaves extract as poisonous substance that kills weeds

Abstract

Plant Kingdom is a vast source of naturally occurring herbicide. One of these plants is the Mango Tree (Mangifera indica). Mango trees grown abundantly on tropical areas especially In the Philippines, since farming is one of major industries in the Philippines and one of farmers’ major expenses is for herbicide. The researcher wants to find a cheap, effective and environmental friendly herbicide which can be comparable to commercial herbicide. So the researcher conducted a study according to its observation that there are no grasses grown underneath a mango tree.

CHAPTER  I

Introduction

Background of the Study

During the 20th century, there was much interest about the use of herbicide to the kill the growth of weeds which tries to absorb the soil’s nutrients intended for the crops. Pesticides are classfied as insecticide, herbicide, rodenticide and fungicide. The plant is a vast source of naturally occuring and selective herbicide. It may be extracted from the powdered portions of plants such as the flower, leaves, stem and roots controlling or killing the growth of weeds that will absorb the nutrients of soil which is needed by crops. Herbicide that usually consisted of a poisonous substance, Alkaloi and one opr more non poisonous inert ingredients may dilute or stabilized the poison. The Alkaloid which can be obtain from the leaves of Mango(Mangifera indica) can be use as herbicide.

Mango(Mangifera indica) which is one of the abundant tree in our country has different part which can be use. One of this is the leaves. The leaves, which has no use can be another source of herbicide. It contains the substance Alkaloid.

Statement of the problem:

This research will try to find out wether Alkaloid which is the substance present in the leaves of Mango leaves has the capacity of killing small plants like weeds. And it also tries to find out if there is an effect to the plant where Mango leave extract applied to. Specifically tries to answer the following questions:

1. Do alkaloid substance which present in Mango leaves extract can kill weeds?

2. Do Mango leaves extract environmental friendly?

3. Do Mango leaves extract had an effect to the plant where the extract applied to?

4. Is there any difference between the weeds applied with Mango leave extract and the plant with no Mango leave extract applied to it?

Hyphothesis:

There is an effect on the weeds applied with Mango leave extract.

 Significance of the Study:

The use of Mango(Mangifera indica) as herbicide has  killed several number of weeds which absorbs the soils nutrient intended to crops. Using Mango extract, it can help farmers to lessen thier duties of pulling off weeds time after time. They will not spend money for thgis herbicide because it is found in the environment.

Scope and Limititaion:

This study is limited only on determening the effect of Mango(Mangifera indica) leave extract on weeds.

Definition of Terms:

herbicide- a chemical preparation designed to kill plants, especially weeds, or to inhibit their growth

Mango-an evergreen tree that produces mangoes. Native to: tropical Asia.

weeds-a plant, especially a wild plant, growing where it is not wanted

leave extract- substance that are obtained from the leaves of Mango.

Different portion of the plant had many use, one of these is the leaves. The leaves contain toxic substance; mangiferum, resinous acid, mangiferic acid and resinol mangiferon. Its toxicity level when it is being feed to rats according to a related study: “The Feasibility of Mango leaves as an effective Pesticide” is LD 50: Lethal dose. 50 percent kill. Intraperitoneal Rodent Rat, 365 ml/kg.

CHAPTER III

Methodology

Materials:

  • Caserol

  • Commercial Herbicde(BiomaX and Lasso)

  • Pail and Dipper

  • Mango Leaves( 1 kilo)

  • water ( 1 liter)

A. The Making Of Herbicide

First, The researcher will gather all the Materials needed for the procedure.  Then, The researcher will boil the Mango leaves( 1 kilogram) in the caserole with 1 liter of water for about 45 mins; after which the researcher will get the caserole in the stove and separate the decoction from the Mango leaves by straining it.Then , the researcher will place the Mango Leave decoction in a pail and let it cool for a few minutes.

B. Testing Of the Product

The weeds will be plant a plot in a plot that will get equal amount of sunlight, herbicide and the same kind of soil used. There will be three trials in every set-up that will made; in set-up A (leaves applied with Mango leaves decoction), set-up B ( weed applied with Lasso) and in set-up C— the control set-up (weeds applied only with water. All of the set-ups will be observed for the first one week of the weeds being applied with Herbicide and water. Each set-up will be applied with equal amount of herbicide or water everyday. And the results will be observed according to its physical changes.

According to the data above, Mango leaves extract ( Mangifera idica) can be a good alternative herbicide for commercial ones. It shows a good quality and effectiveness of a herbicide. But the commercial herbicide could kill the weeds faster than the mango leaves decoction.

CHAPTER V

Recomendation

The researcher recommends it to all people especially to farmers.income.My product is affordable, environmental friendly and avialable everywhere.

Conclusion:

I  conclude that Mango leaves decoction is capable of producing high quality herbicide which has the same characteristics to the commercial ones but environmental friendly.
